BO
Bo, the second-largest city in Sierra Leone, plays a crucial role in the country’s healthcare system. While it serves as a medical hub for the southern region, Bo faces significant challenges, including a high disease burden, limited healthcare infrastructure, and financial barriers to access.
Disease Burden in Bo
Like the rest of Sierra Leone, Bo is grappling with a dual disease burden—communicable diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, and waterborne infections remain widespread, while non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease are on the rise.
Key Health Insights:
- Communicable, Maternal, Neonatal, and Nutritional Diseases (CMNNs): Account for approximately 65% of Sierra Leone’s overall disease burden. Malaria, cholera, and respiratory infections are among the leading causes of illness and death.
- Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs): Contribute around 29% to the total disease burden. Poor nutrition, lack of preventive care, and limited awareness exacerbate conditions like diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
- Injuries and Accidents: Make up about 6% of the health burden, particularly due to road accidents and workplace injuries.
- Maternal and Child Health: Despite free healthcare services for pregnant women, lactating mothers, and children under five, Bo continues to struggle with high maternal and infant mortality rates due to inadequate emergency obstetric care and neonatal services.
With only about four doctors per 100,000 people, the healthcare system in Bo remains understaffed, and patients often travel long distances for specialized care. Additionally, 62% of healthcare expenses come from out-of-pocket payments, making access to treatment a significant challenge for low-income families.
