INTRODUCTION
Cameroon is a Central African country located on the Gulf of Guinea between latitudes 2° and 13° north and longitudes 9° and 16° east. It covers a surface area of 475,440 square km., extending approximately 1200 km. from north to south and over 800 km. from west to east. It shares boundaries with Nigeria to the west, Chad to the northeast, the Central African Republic to the east, and Congo, Gabon, and Equatorial Guinea to the south. HEALTH INFRASTRUCTURE
At the institutional level, the health system is structured at three levels, namely: the central level, the intermediate level, and the peripheral level. It also has three sub-sectors: a public sub-sector, a private sub-sector, and a traditional sub-sector that are all under the responsibility of the Ministry of Public Health (MOH), by Decree No. 2013/093 of 3 April 2013 on the organization of this institution. According to this document, the MOH is responsible for the development and implementation of the Government’s public health policy.
Basic care, such as malaria management, is provided in 4,432 health facilities, immunization in 3,818 health facilities, and tuberculosis management in 256 health facilities.
DISEASE BURDEN IN CAMEROON
Communicable Diseases (CDs) accounted for 40.7% of the burden of disease in Cameroon. (HIV/ AIDS: 11.5%; malaria: 10.80%; lower respiratory tract infections: 10.10%; diarrheal diseases: 5.60%; tuberculosis: 1.40% and STIs: 1.30%. These CDs account for 41.1% of deaths.
Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) accounted for 14.2% of the burden of disease. The main ones are: cardio vascular diseases: 4.7%; road traffic accidents: 4%; unintentional accidents: 2.9% and chronic kidney disease: 0.7%. However, they are responsible for 23.3% of deaths, excluding Diabetes.
MAJOR HOSPITALS IN CAMEROON
Top Govt/Private Hospitals in Cameroon
- Mbingo Baptist Hospital
It was established in 1952. It is located in the Northwest Region of Cameroon. It is a 310-bedded hospital.
- Bamenda Regional Hospital
It was opened in 1956 by Sir Robert, the British High Commissioner based in Lagos Nigeria. It has a capacity of 400 beds with a staff strength of about 440 workers.
- Elisabeth Catholic General Hospital
This is a general hospital with 350 beds including different departments (obstetrics/gynecology, urology, general surgery, dentistry, ophthalmology, pediatrics, radiology, and infective disease), laboratories, pharmacy, and an internal Nurse School of Health Sciences. The hospital has been officially recognized by the Cameroonian Government since 1952.
- Central Hospital of Yaoundé
It was established in 1933. It is a 381-bed tertiary-level general teaching hospital. The hospital employs nearly 800 staff including 95 doctors and nearly 270 nurses. The hospital provides surgical care, obstetrics, gynecology, and elderly care services along with radiology, intensive care, emergency services, and an outpatient clinic to the population of the city and more widely across the country. The hospital is also a research and surveillance center.
- Limber Provincial Hospital
Limbe Provincial Hospital ( also called Mile 1 Hospital) is a 200-bed hospital in the Southwest Province of Cameroon and is the principal referral hospital for the region. It was established in 1972.
