Africa
Africa is the world’s second-largest and second-most populous continent, after Asia in both cases. It spreads up to 30.3 million km2 (11.7 million square miles) including adjacent islands, and therefore covers 6% of Earth’s total surface area and 20% of its land area. As of 2018, with 1.3 billion people, it accounts for about 16% of the world’s human population.
Literacy Rate | 65.469 |
Population | 1,275,920,972 (2018 est.) |
Majority of African people are believed to follow Islam and Christianity as their religion. Therefore, the statistics accounts for 45% of the population being Christian, 40% are Muslim10% and follow traditional religion.
Health Indicators
- Life Expectancy at birth: WHO estimates show that the average life expectancy at birth in the African Region is low but increasing. Over years, the average life expectancy has found to be increased from 57 to 60 years.
- Child Mortality Rate: The child mortality data from WHO suggests that the neonatal and under-five mortality rates in the Region are declining fairly rapidly. Over the years from 2000-2015 the neonatal mortality rate per 1000 live births declined by 38% from 41 in 2000 to 28 in 2015, and the under-five mortality rate per 1000 live births declined by up to 64% from 153 in 2000 to 81 in 2015.
- Maternal Mortality rate: The Maternal Mortality rate of the African Region is comparatively high and is declining at a very slow rate. By the end of 2015, MMR for the African region was found to be 542 per 100,000 live births which is much higher than that of Europe. It is quite challenging for the healthcare system of Africa to bring down the MMR to 70 per 100,000 live births by the year 2030.
Disease Burden
Communicable Diseases: African as a continent aim to end the epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and neglected tropical and other communicable diseases by 2030. The prevalence of HIV has declined to a great extend over years and is now stagnated. The rate in 2016 was 1.2 per 1000 uninfected population, down from 2.1 in 2011 (11% average annual rate of decline). The burden of Malaria is on the rise and is believed to decline over years. In 2016, there were an estimated 240 cases of malaria per 1000 population, which is about 194 million new cases of malaria. WHO estimates show that TB incidence rate in the Region is still high, but the trend during the period 2010–2016 is towards a steady decline in the incidence rate, with a rate per 100 000 population dropping by 24% from 322 in 2010 to 254 in 2016. With better health protocols and timely treatment, the rate of these and the other tropical communicable disease can be reduced in coming years.
Non-Communicable Diseases: In fact, of high prevalence of communicable diseases in Africa, NCD are still the leading cause of deaths. Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases and diabetes, are the leading cause of mortality in the world, and their burden is growing both in the WHO African Region and globally. This rapidly growing cause of mortality can be controlled by adopting better healthcare system and making it accessible and affordable for the citizens.
Health Financing
Financing of health in the African region remains suboptimal and reducing. The Government budget for health as a share of total budget was 10% which is much lower than the set target of 15%. The per capita government expenditure on health in the region in 2014 was 51.6 US Dollars at the average rate which is a very small fraction of the per capita expenditure on health in America (USD 1,858.3) and Europe (USD 1,828.1).
